A Man Of My Word
Well, there's no easy way to say it so here goes. CARB approved the new fuel standards on Friday, which will raise our gas taxes by as much as 65 cents a gallon. I made a promise if this passed, and as of today I followed through on it. I've re-registered as a Republican voter.
What does this mean? I'm glad you asked.
When it comes to social justice matters I've always been liberal. If I see someone being a racist, transphobic piece of shit I will not hesitate to call them out or worse. Same as always, and that will never change. I've got everyone's back there. But when it comes to money matters I've always been conservative, and with the way things are going I've hit my limit for bullshit.
For the past couple of years I've had to shut up and play nice while people are having their student loans forgiven. I paid mine off, but it wasn't easy. I even had to file for forbearance a few times when times got really rough. No one helped me, so why should people who willingly borrowed tens of thousands of dollars for an education get a free pass?
Then there's the immigrant situation here in California. They're getting assistance for just about everything you can think of while I don't get shit. It angers me that I'm required to purchase medical insurance or risk a large fine while people who literally just got here via an underground tunnel or a panga boat that washed onshore gets coverage gratis.
Sacramento and even my own local government wants to raise our taxes for various pet projects, yet where is this money going? Our sidewalks remain a trip and fall hazard, our streets are still crumbling, and whoever owns Newell Brands stock must be doing well considering the increasing number of Coleman tents I see pitched around town.
Our government must learn how to do more with less, just like the rest of us. I hope my vote next June helps reinforce that lesson to California Democrats.
65 cents a gallon on already the most expensive gas in the US? I don't blame you, I'd be pissed too. I think a lot of people are tired of working hard, doing the right thing, being responsible and getting screwed by our government. I understand exactly how you feel.
ReplyDeleteI think our saving grace right now is that every proposition to increase sales taxes in my area is currently failing. Whether that holds or not remains to be seen.
