Palm Desert: Day 2 - Workout

Efficiency rules the day, and I opt for a somewhat brisk 30 minute walk as soon as I climb out of bed. It's 61 degrees with a nice breeze from the northeast, but even at sunrise the sun lets you know who's boss by merely existing. I quickly realize this is the first sunrise walk I've ever taken where I've felt dehydrated within the first ten minutes.

I'm accompanied by the voice of Jake Brennan, whose Disgraceland podcast both interests and horrifies me with tales of the rich and infamous. Today it's both Dorothy Stratten and Martin Scorsese, and that's my fault. One of my earbuds slips out and when I replace it in my ear I skip from one episode to the next. I only notice when I go from Paul grooming Dorothy to Martin holding a big gun while calling a now legendary movie director.

I spot bunnies both real and metallic along my journey. I also locate a Whole Foods, a Nordstrom Rack, and a few other stores that would interest me if I lived here. At the halfway point, I end up at Barnes & Noble, where I'll be this afternoon to work on my novel.

Upon my return, I head straight for the free breakfast. I was nearly as deflated as the tiny omelets available, so I opt for the ham, egg and cheese croissant whose quantities of these ingredients scream, "Fuck my diet!" loud enough to be confused for a Hardee's/Carl's Jr breakfast item. I also make myself a coffee, which I now realize was the biggest mistake I'll make all day. I'm doomed to spend the rest of today playing catch up with a slight case of dehydration. The banana I grab on my way back to my room will hopefully help matters when I eat it later this morning.

If there's a silver lining to this misadventure, it's that I'll easily surpass 7,000 steps before noon. I'll write for a few hours this morning, take a short cruise through Cathedral City with Miku and then drop by a Joann's in search of four yards of fabric that both pleases me and could be a possible Spo shirt. I don't wish to impose on him, but he offered and I accepted.

And once all of that is done, then the fun begins...
